如果沒有足夠的民意支持，希拉蕊將來即使進入白宮也將缺乏推動議題所需的政治資本。而最糟的情況更可能是，大選日當天，存有危機意識的共和黨選民踴躍出來投票，最後導致希拉蕊白宮夢碎。
希拉蕊的競選有很大的部份在警告選民川普當選美國總統後的災難景況，但她並未描繪出如果她當總統會有什麼引人注目的願景，同時她也無法成功激勵幾個主要選民族群，包括千禧世代、少數族裔以及自由派的民主黨員。
根據多項民意調查顯示，在初選階段，有許多選民是為了阻止川普而支持希拉蕊，如果他們現在認為川普不可能勝選，那麼這些人將缺少出門投票的動機。
根據路透與易普索(Reuters/Ipsos)所做的調查，大約半數的希拉蕊支持者表示，他們支持希拉蕊是為了阻止川普當選。相反的，只有36.5%的人表示，支持希拉蕊是因為她的政策，更只有12.6%的人表示是因為喜歡希拉蕊的人格特質。
佛羅里達大學選舉專家麥當諾(Michael McDonald)指出，投票率和競爭程度相關連，「競爭越激烈，投票率越高」。
麥當諾說，民主黨的主要票源包括年輕人、黑人、拉丁裔以及低收入者，這些人都必須有特定的候選人或議題的激勵才比較可能會出來投票，例如2008年的候選人歐巴馬(Barack Obama)。
希拉蕊的競選情勢一直有著選民過於自信的隱憂，因此一再提醒支持者選情接近以及川普不適合當總統。但隨著希拉蕊領先幅度擴大，要繼續這些說服支持者顯得越來越困難。
